The Smallest of Things
All of these little bugs: foraminifera
Dots on the page they are (usually)
But, under the microscope, beauty is evident
Complex and elegant fragility
They're not just a pretty shell, but informational
Telling a story of seas long ago
For chemical signatures/isotope ratios
Indicate temperatures, suggest an age
But, wait, there's more, you see, forams, though tiny things
Build, in their billions, metres of stone
Useful for carving, town buildings, and crushing
To give us cement or to make limey loam
From what we can barely see, such versatility
They can't know us, but we change their lives too
And those inescapable links we can't break show the
Smallest of things might give our destiny
