The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga

It is no surprise that I should pick up this title, being a fangirl myself. And mostly I enjoyed it. I liked the geekery, even if my tastes are more 'goth girl' Kyra's than the protagonist fanboy's. I liked the way the friendship developed between them (I like good kids being seduced by not-as-bad-as-people-think kids), and I liked the way she called him on the characterisation of the woman in his comic.

Alas, this was a bit too much of a coming-of-age story for it to really satisfy me. I would've preferred a stronger plot arc. Also: surely even fifteen year olds know you want to show your portfolio to editors, not fellow artists. And why are boys who draw comics always insomniacs? What does Bendis think of being in a YA novel? Mysteries all.
